What agency looks like: picking and choosing to participate

In Nepal, we found that many young people were largely unable to influence child-centred programming in meaningful ways. Sometimes, however, these organizations surprised us. In Nepal, Khan was asked by the school to assist with child-rights programming by helping young people become involved in more meaningful decision-making processes, thus contributing towards the organization’s agenda on more Adivasi Janajati social justice. Since the organization was affiliated with a national university of Nepal, he suggested hiring volunteer university students as research assistants. Four youth ambassadors from four different Adivasi Janajati trans-Himalayan groups were chosen, Sabin, Tara, Diki, and Karma, who suggested that the organization should focus on specific sectors and implement projects within each sector in a way that strengthened relationships between the trans-Himalayas, Kathmandu, and other regions of Nepal. Drawing on their own disciplinary backgrounds and interests, Sabin chose to focus on education with an emphasis on higher education concerns of trans-Himalayan Adivasi Janajati in Nepal. He worked with the NGO affiliates to create scholarship opportunities for trans-Himalayan Adivasi Janajati students searching for higher education opportunities in Nepal, which had little to no social networks or funding.

Tara chose to focus on agriculture, particularly on planning ways of increasing sustainable organic agricultural and recycling methods. Tara and her peers were able to meet with an ex-agriculture minister of Nepal and have been planning ways of partnering with a multi-million-dollar Japanese project on implementing more green recycling throughout Nepal. Diki was interested in raising awareness around health development in trans-Himalayan regions where healthcare is lacking. Diki started to bridge NGO’s services with local CBOs across the Himalayas to increase workshops on hygiene and common and preventable health concerns. Karma, coming from a hotel management background, wanted to create an apprenticeship-style opportunity for those who wanted to learn hotel and hospitality-related skills. Karma worked with an NGO to create a space for young people and the elderly seeking to develop such skills and continues to work on further education and employment opportunities in the field.

While at the organization, Sabin, Tara, Diki, and Karma also advocated for those still affected by the earthquakes in Kathmandu. They worked as a team to advocate for youth-centred resources including mental health services, medical provisions such as physiotherapy, adequate shelter repairs, or funding for school and living-related costs from being displaced to alternative locations. The group worked with an NGO to facilitate as many individual provisions as possible and showed the organization that youth-centred collaboration can result in increased effectiveness towards fulfilling the organization’s goals.

Similarly, the organizations Sabin, Tara, Diki, and Karma encountered facilitated a space that allowed for engaged participation from young people within organizational spaces which enabled them to mobilize their lived experiences with displacement towards further societal changes. Through these experiences, young people engaged in a collaborative framework by working with other young people and organizational officials to address fundamental rights and efforts to ensure sustainable integration experiences in Kathmandu. A key consideration required in order to achieve
